Death Toll Rises In Britain, Pound Dips – 20 April, 2020
A rise in Britain’s death toll caused the pound to slip as expectations of easing restrictions any time soon went out the window. Economic activity has continued to freeze across Britain, but that did not stop a reported 596, bringing the country’s total deaths to over 1,600. Against the dollar, the pound fell 0.2% to $1.2481 and 0.3% against the euro to 87.20 pence per euro. Because Britain entered a lockdown after many other European countries, many estimate that the country will not be able to re-open until after those European countries do, with experts still forecasting a deep recession despite both the British government as well as the Bank of England launching several stimulus packages.
