SOTU Does Little To Change Dollar, Aussie Tumbles – 5 February, 2019
President Trump’s speech at the State of The Union had little effect on the dollar as he reiterated his known priorities such as illegal immigration and the building of the wall. Against a basket of six major currencies, the dollar index remained close to the two week high of 96.135 it had touched earlier after settling at 96.072. After slipping to its lowest since Jan. 28 the previous session, slipping 0.25 percent, the euro was stable at $1.1400. The Australian dollar tumbled on central bank’s chief Philip Lowe’s comments of a possible rate cut, falling 1 percent to $0.7165. Against the yen, the dollar dipped 0.15 percent to 109.78 yen, having gained 0.4 percent the night before.
